When buying a bed for your dog you need to work out how big the bed needs to be. You do this by measuring from your dogs nose to its bum, this ensures your dog will have enough room to stretch out when in bed. However if you notice your dog currently likes to curl up when it’s sleeping, it may prefer a smaller size bed so it feels a bit more snug when it’s asleep.
A lot of puppies chew and if left untrained will carry on chewing later on in life. If your dog chews chairs and other furniture it is best to buy them a large plastic dog bed. This will prevent you spending a fortune replacing the more expensive range of dog beds.
On a night time dogs like to feel safe when in bed just like you and I. To help them feel more secure there are two methods which are effective. The first is putting a toy and even an item of your clothing in its bed. The reason behind this is it associates you and security together, so having your sent their will help it feel safe. The second method is to place the xl dog bed in a corner, this will put the dog mind to rest knowing nothing can creep up on it from behind.
The best way is to start when they are puppies, soon as they fall asleep simply pick them up and put them in their bed. If you have a fully grown dog you should place the extra large dog bed next to yours to start with. Then each night move it further away from your bed until you have it in your desired room.
As dogs get old it’s common for them to get arthritis or other muscle and join pains/ aches. Consider buying a bed that has memory foam or thick padding to help ease them whilst sleeping.
A dog loves nothing more than to role around in mud and everything else when out and about. Smells can easily transfer to your new dog bed which you may notice after a few weeks. It is always best practice to buy a dog bed that is machine washable so you can get rid of any smell easily.
If your house is susceptible to drafts, consider buying a high sided dog bed to ensure your dog does not feel the draft when it is trying to sleep. It is the same as you or I if we were to sleep with the window open we may have a stiff neck when we awaken.
When picking a new dog bed make sure it goes with the furniture. There is nothing worse than buying any old dog bed then disliking it because it doesn’t blend in with the rest of the room.
